Using sponges to wipe out cancer

Manzamine A, a natural product derived from certain groups of sponges, can block the growth of cervical cancer cells, report Medical University of South Carolina researchers, working with investigators and students at the University of South Carolina, College of Charleston, Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia and University of Malaya in Malaysia. Manzamine A targets a protein that is highly expressed in many cancers, including cervical cancer, and is the first reported inhibitor of this protein.
