Tracking fishing vessels and sharks reveal protection for large mobile animals

An international initiative to increase the amount of Marine Protected Area (MPAs) from the current 2 percent to 10 percent by the year 2020 has drawn critics over the need and the practicality. New study identified all fishing activity around a remote pacific MPA and correlated it to reef shark movements. The study revealed 6,752 fishing days over 24 months, demonstrating both need for MPAs, and ability to monitor them effectively.
