Thor Actor Chris Hemsworth Donates $1 Million To Australian Bushfire Relief Efforts

Thor actor Chris Hemsworth has announced he will donate $1 million to help support the ongoing firefighting efforts in Australia as the country faces devastating bushfires.

In an Instagram post from his home in Australia, Hemsworth announced his plan to donate the money and called on his fans to chip in whatever they can afford.

“Like you, I want to support the fight against the bushfires here in Australia. My family and I are contributing a million dollars. Hopefully you guys can chip in too,” he said. “Every penny counts so whatever you can muster up is greatly appreciated. Beyond appreciative to everyone around the world for their well wishes and donations. It really does make a difference, so dig deep!”

The ongoing fires in Australia have thus far burned more than 15 million acres, which is twice the size of Belgium. At least 25 people have died and around homes have been lost. Estimates state that around 500 million animals have died.

Hemsworth is not the only celebrity to pledge money toward helping support the fire crisis in Australia. Elton John announced during his Tuesday evening concert in Sydney that he would also donate $1 million, while Shawn Mendes, Ellen DeGeneres, Pink, and Kylie Minogue have also given money.

Russell Crowe, who is a New Zealand citizen living in Australia, won a Golden Globe this weekend but he did not appear at the event because he was protecting his family from the fires. His acceptance speech was read by Jennifer Aniston, and in it, he called on the world to “act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy, and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is.”
