Out of the darkness: A new spider found deep within an Indiana cave

A small cave in southern Indiana turned out to be the one and only home of a new species of spider, now going by the name Islandiana lewisi. The dark, wet, muddy cave near the Ohio River was apparently the perfect match for this previously unknown sheet weaver. The spider, which measures about 2 mm in size, is described by Marc Milne and Elizabeth Wells, University of Indianapolis, in the open access journal Subterranean Biology.
