Man says kimchi soup he ordered at Clementi Mall tastes ‘totally like plain water’

Singapore is known for abundant choices of delicious and affordable dishes, so it’s reasonable for people to expect to receive flavourful food whenever they order it.

To his surprise, the kimchi soup one man ordered turned out to have no flavour at all.

To make matters worse, when he tried to give feedback in a nice way to the staff at a Korean food place at The Clementi Mall, he claimed that not only was the woman server rude, but she also told him that the soup she served was the usual standard for kimchi soup.

“Highly recommended not to go there,” wrote Jayden Lim on the popular COMPLAINT SINGAPORE Facebook page on Saturday (Dec 10).

“Please try not to go to this so call Korea food. I tried to give feedback nicely to the front staff about the kimchi soup with rice with totally no taste at all. And it totally likes plain water soup and no appetite at all,” he wrote.

She refused to change the soup, which cost $6.50 with a serving of rice.

After he asked her to taste the soup, the woman told him the soup needed more chilli, which he needed to pay for.

“The service and the food cannot make it…highly recommended not to go there. It is located at Clementi mall and unit number#04-33,” he added.

Kimchi-jjigae, which is also known as kimchi soup or kimchi stew, is usually made with pork or seafood, scallions, onions, and other ingredients, aside from kimchi, of course.

It is usually bright red, but the photo that Mr Lim posted was more orange in colour and appeared to contain only vegetables.

Since kimchi alone already has a strong taste, it’s hard to imagine that any kimchi dish would taste like water.

Some netizens commented that they have had the same experience as Mr Lim.

One commenter even wrote that she would be better off if she ate Korean instant noodles with kimchi.

Others wrote that the soup did not appear to be full of flavour.

“Looks like leftover from yesterday lol,” another wrote.

Nevertheless, one woman wrote that a branch of the same eatery at Seletar Mall serves good food.

“The same Ha-jun at B1 Seletar Mall is good. Different standards!”
