A new scientific name for Brazil's national tree

The national tree of Brazil, locally known as Pau-brasil, has been given a new scientific name in a study published in the open-access plant taxonomy journal PhytoKeys. The authors demonstrate that the species represents a genetically and morphologically distinct evolutionary lineage within a group of 200 species. The new name chosen for this distinct genus, Paubrasilia, is a Latinization of its Brazilian common name, and recognizes the importance of the tree to Brazil.
