Saving the Underworld: Clarifying the stygofauna classification for improved conservation

Many of the particularly vulnerable subterranean habitats are bound to be destroyed as a result of human activities and interests. The challenge is to protect the ones that are closely linked to the survival of the species living in them. Hence, it is essential that the distribution is clearly defined for each species. Brazilian scientists discuss the current classification and its complexities in a paper published in the open access journal Subterranean Biology.
